Making the News

CI’s Bracero Exhibit Will Include the Story of Braceros in Ventura County. CSU Channel Islands (CI) will host, “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program 1942-1964”, a bilingual exhibition organized by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and CI’s local exhibit called “The Braceros of Ventura County”. These exhibits will be on display at CI’s John Spoor Broome Library September 9 through October 31, 2010. For residents of Ventura County, the exhibit serves to illustrate the impact of the Bracero Program on the region. The program, begun in 1942 as a Mexican guest-worker program, brought Mexican men across the border to supplement the labor shortage created during World War II. The braceros signed work contracts that could range from three to six months and be renewed at the end of the term. Once in the United States they were housed in labor camps. The largest of these camps was located in the city of Oxnard, the Buena Vista Labor camp, which housed 5,000 men during the 1950’s. Twenty percent of all braceros who came to Ventura County worked in the citrus, fruit, and vegetable fields. For information about the many special events that will take place during the course of the exhibit, visit http://www.csuci.edu/bracero-exhibit/events.htm or contact Pilar Pacheco at 805-437-8851 or pilar.pacheco@csuci.edu.

CI’s MS in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Features an Emphasis in Stem Cell Technology and Laboratory Management. An MS in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics with an emphasis in Stem Cell Technology and Laboratory Management is offered by CSU Channel Islands (CI) through its Extended University. It is a fully funded program designed to meet the needs of stem cell research fields and research and development of the biotechnology industry. Classes meet in the evening or on weekends and incoming students can enroll throughout the year. The two-year program has four terms per year with no recesses, and the second year is an internship. A student can use his or her elective units to participate in an international component if desired. For information on the program and on the enrollment process, contact CI’s Extended University at 805-437-2748 or exed@csuci.edu.

CI receives 1.1 Million Dollar Grant for Student Support Services. CSU Channel Islands (CI) has been selected to receive a 1.1 million dollar, five-year Federal TRIO Student Support Service grant. This year’s federal process was especially competitive given the overall economic climate in higher education, increased pursuit of federal grant dollars and minimal federal funding increases for TRIO programs. Federal TRIO Programs began with Upward Bound, which emerged from the Economic Opportunity Act in 1964. Talent Search, a second outreach program created under the Higher Education Act, was begun in 1965. Student Support Services, originally known as Special Services for Disadvantaged Students, was authorized by the Higher Education Amendments in 1968 and became the third program in TRIO. Today, there are a total of eight TRIO programs. For further information regarding the grant or CI’s Student Support Services program, please contact Damien Peña, Interim Dean of Students at damien.pena@csuci.edu or 805-437-3218.

CI Alumni & Friends Association would like to thank its 1000 members for their continued support of student and alumni programming!
