Option 1:  Pathway to College Campus Visit Program

The Pathway to College campus visit program is hosted by a group of CSU Channel Islands (CI) student volunteers, known as the Leaders in Education Awareness Program (LEAP), and serves K-8th grade students at CI every Friday during the academic year from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  The four-hour program consists of a “How to Get to College” presentation, CI student panel, campus tour and includes fun exercises to help students retain what they learn throughout the day. This program serves thousands of students each year and begins the college planning conversation between students and their parents.

Pathway to College Campus Visit Overview:

9:30 a.m.  Elementary or middle school arrives to the CI campus at the Vista bus stop on Ventura Street.  Visiting school is greeted by LEAP student volunteers and is led to a classroom in the Broome Library for the Pathway to College presentation.

9:45 a.m.  K-5th Grade: Pathway to College presentation begins and focuses on goal setting and preparing for a bright future.  6th-8th Grade: Pathway to College presentation begins and includes age-appropriate information regarding A-G college entrance requirements, college entrance exams, the four systems of higher education in California as well as financial aid.

10:30 a.m.  LEAP student volunteer panel and Q&A which provides visiting students the opportunity to hear about the daily lives of current college students.  Visiting students are encouraged to come prepared with questions.

11:00 a.m.  Campus tours commence and typically include visits to the following locations: Broome Library, University Town Center, The Cove Bookstore, Bell Tower, student housing, Recreation Center and Islands Café.  Due to on-campus construction and for the safety of your students, chaperones are asked to remain with their tour group at all times.

12:00 p.m.   Sack lunch on the South Quad grass area (visiting schools are responsible for their own lunches).

1:00 p.m.  The “Class of 20__” photo opportunity takes place on the steps in front of Islands Café.  Two students are selected by chaperones to dress in a cap and gown and visiting students hold a sign with their graduation date from a four-year institution.  A picture will be emailed to the field trip contact by the following week, so please be sure to have every child’s parent/guardian sign a photo release form before their visit to release use of the photo to the California State University system.

1:30 p.m.  Visiting school departs from the Vista bus stop on Ventura Street.

Pathway to College Campus Visit Availability:

Due to high demand, elementary and middle school administrators are encouraged to book their visit as soon as possible.  This program runs on a first-come, first-served basis and operates rain or shine.  Reservations for campus visits are accepted year-round, and Pathway to College Campus Visits will occur Fridays from September 3, 2010 through December 3, 2010 and January 28, 2011 through May 6, 2011.  The Pathway to College Campus Visit program occurs only on Fridays and is limited to 60 students per visit.  No tours will be conducted on campus closure dates or during spring recess from March 21-26, 2011.

Pathway to College Campus Visit Expectations:

In order to successfully host visiting elementary and middle schools on a weekly basis, each school is required to bring one chaperone for every ten students.  These chaperones must remain with the students for the duration of the program.  Additionally, sack lunches are strongly encouraged; however, if you choose to make on-campus lunch arrangements, please do so three weeks prior to your visit.  No lunch arrangements can be made the same day as your visit.  To arrange an on-campus lunch, please contact Dave Nirenberg, director of Commercial Services at (805) 437-2668.  In an effort to make continual improvements to our program, your feedback is requested.  At the end of your visit each chaperone will be given an evaluation.  Please return your completed evaluation to a LEAP student volunteer before your departure.
